Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of late Romano-British pottery. Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00285, the pit had no other stratigraphic relationships. It was located immediately to the west of the shallow slot 012AD00555.

Discussion

The large, though quite shallow pit contained two fills. The first (012AD00573), extended across the whole area of the pit to a depth of 8-10cm. It was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 15% chalk inclusions (up to 3cm in diameter). Both daub and charcoal flecking were present (one sample of each taken). The second, and final fill (012AD00666) was 60% redeposited natural chalk (fragments up to 15cm in diameter) in a sandy loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). There were no finds associated with this final event.

The pit was cut into solid chalk with a wide U profile.
