Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture recovered were four later Roman pot sherds. The feature was sealed by spit 012AD00506. The relationship with the smaller pit 012AD00869 immediately to the south was not established. (Although the plan above indicates that they were adjoining, in fact they were separated by a ridge of hillwash, which was inadvertently excavated as part of the pit fill).

Discussion

This was a large but shallow pit, located just to the west of enclosure ditches 012AD07227 and 012AD01006. The single fill was 012AD00864, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 15% chalk inclusions (1-6cm in diameter). Both daub and charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into solid chalk, with an irregular profile.
