Pit

Phasing

The only material culture recovered were three later Roman pot sherds. The feature was sealed by spit 012AD00506. The relationship with the larger pit 012AD00865 immediately to the north was not established. (Although the plan above indicates that they were adjoining, in fact they were separated by a ridge of hillwash, which was inadvertently excavated as part of the pit fill).

Discussion

This was a small, shallow pit, located just to the west of enclosure ditches 012AD07227 and 012AD01006. The single fill was 012AD00868, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 30-50% chalk inclusions (up to 10cm in diameter). A little daub and charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into solid chalk, with a U-shaped profile. It was heavily plough truncated.
