Discussion

A terrace was noted running east-west across the central part of area 2DC, and the fill (generally a hillwash, with occasional chalk inclusions) was removed in a number of arbitrary spits. This the second of three spits removed from the central part of the terrace, and consisted of a much darker (Munsell 75YR 4/2) sandy silty loam than either 002DC00181 below or 002DC00171 above. This fill accumulates in the lee of the terrace, and was also noted further to the east. When analysed, it appears that the terrace begins to fill (002DC00181) during the Roman period, a process which is apparently completed sometime during the Anglian period (002DC00171).
