Slot

Phasing

The slot contained two Roman pot sherds, as well as a single Anglian sherd. Unless this was an intrusive sherd, it is highly significant, as this was the earliest feature in the immediate area.

Discussion

When the material comprising context 012AD08490 had been removed, this curvilinear feature was revealed. It had a different alignment to all of the other ditches and slots in the area. If the feature continued to curve on the same alignment, it would almost become a ring ditch (similar to those excavated in area 11BC) The single fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4) with 10-15% chalk inclusions (0.5-3cm in diameter). No daub or charcoal flecking were noted.

The slot was cut into sand & gravel with a U-shaped profile.
