Plough Furrow

Phasing

Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00421, the feature had no other stratigraphic relationships.

Discussion

A linear, north-south oriented plough furrow, part of the ridge and furrow system. It was filled with a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), and contained 50% chalk inclusions. It was initially thought that 012AD05152 180cm to the west was also part of this system. However, it soon became apparent that there were a number of differences between the two features. This feature contained a fragment of Medieval pottery, was very shallow and had an irregular base. Ditch 012AD05152 had a regular V-profile and was much deeper. It also contained some large fragments of late Roman pottery jars, as well as a possible Iron Age sherd.
