Phasing

Apart from being sealed by spit 012AD00421, the feature had no other stratigraphic relationships. It contained two Romano-British pot sherds as well as a possible Iron Age sherd.

Discussion

A linear, north-south oriented ditch, initially believed to be part of the ridge and furrow system, like 012AD05150 180cm to the east. Both features were filled with a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), and contained 50% chalk inclusions. However, it soon became apparent that there were a number of differences between the two features. 012AD05150 contained a fragment of medieval pottery, was very shallow and had an irregular base. This feature had a regular V-profile and was much deeper. It also contained some large fragments of late Roman pottery jars, as well as a possible Iron Age sherd.
