Discussion

This was a small, rectangular pit (with only the central part excavated), located immediately to the west of Grubenhaus 012AD08030. It contained a single fill (012AD08354), a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4) with 10% chalk inclusions (0.5-1.5cm in diameter). No daub, but slight charcoal flecking near the base, was noted. The feature also contained a rounded fragment of red sandstone. The only animal species represented was cattle. Interestingly, the jaw and longbones only were found, with the longbones placed across each other (rather like a skull and crossbones motif).

The pit was cut into sand & gravel, with a U-shaped profile.
