Discussion

This was the third of three triangular cleaning spits, located in the extreme south-western corner of the area. They were issued with different spit numbers beacause a different excavation technique was adopted here (shovel-scraped in 10cm spits). The material removed was a loamy sand (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). There were no finds. No further excavation took place, as it was clear that this was now at a prehistoric level, and outside the remit of the 1995 excavation (primarily concerned with the late Roman and Anglian phases).
