Discussion
This was the first cleaning spit in the 1992 season. It covered the whole
area, and was under the previous season's spits 011BE00139
and 011BE00140. The area was trowelled
back, apart from a small segment near the north-western boundary which
was shovel-scraped before trowelling began (due to being slightly higher
than the rest of the area). The material removed was generally a sandy
loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), though some darker patches were visible.
Some features were becoming visible in the south-western part of the area,
but over most of the area further cleaning was required. A large quantity
of finds (highest density in the north-western quadrant) and animal bones
were found. Finds of note were a late Roman coin, a Middle Saxon sceatta
and a Middle Saxon copper alloy pin..
