Stratigraphic Matrix Diagram
The matrix diagram above shows an extract of the spits from Areas 11BE
and 11CE indicating their relationships to each other. Click on the spit
number which you wish to see in more detail. The bold, flashing (Netscape

Discussion
This area was machined in 1990, although no excavation was carried out
until 1991, thus the context numbers begin with 011BE00100. This was the
initial cleaning spit (shovel-scraped and then trowelled) over the whole
of the stripped area (later the area was extended to the east). The material
removed was generally a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), although
patches of slightly lighter material was also noted. Very few slightly
more chalky patches could be seen, although these were not obvious. Even
after three further cleaning spits were excavated in 1991, very little
definition was achieved, and further cleaning was required in the 1992
season (011CE context numbers). Finds of note include a Middle Saxon styca.
